Enrico Gherlone (born January 20, 1956, Genoa, Italy) is Full Professor of Odontostomatological Diseases (SSD MED/28), at the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University of Milan, he has held the position of Magnifico Rector since 8 November 2018 (re-elected in November 2021) and Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University.[1]

Prior to his appointment as Rector, at the same University, he was Pro-Rector for Institutional Relations, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, President of the Master of Science Degree Course in Dentistry and Dental Prosthetics and Director of the School of Specialization in Oral Surgery.

He is Director of the Department of Dentistry at the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan, former Member of the National Planning Commission at the Ministry of Health from 2008 to 2011 and Full Member of the Higher Health Council from 2010 to 2013, where he represented the dentistry area until August 2013. During the same period, he received delegated authority from Minister Fazio as National Dentistry Representative, thus representing all Italian dentists in institutional and freelance settings.

On 15 February 2022 he was again appointed Member of the Higher Health Council.

From 2012 to 2021 he was a member of the "Technical Group on Dentistry" of the Department of Public Health and Innovation, Ministry of Health, established by DD of 24 May 2012 and renewed by DD of 23 January 2014.

From January 2015 to December 2018, he was President of the National College of University Lecturers of Dentistry Disciplines.

Since 10 April 2020 he has been Coordinator of the Ministry of Health's technical table on "operational indications for dental activities during phase 2 of the Covid-19 pandemic" satellite of the Central Cts.

Since 30 September 2020, he has been a member of the National Observatory for Specialist Health Training of the Ministry of University and Research.

He is currently Coordinator of the Technical Table of the Ministry of Health aimed at training, research and planning of dental activity, appointed by Decree of the Chief of Cabinet of the Minister of Health on 5 November 2020.

Since December 2020, he has been Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Palazzo Arese Borromeo European Cultural Centre Association.

In November 2021 he was re-elected Magnifico Rettore of the University Vita-Salute San Raffaele.

On 15 February 2022, by decree no. 2923 of the Ministry of Health, he was appointed full member of the Superior Council of Health.

In December 2022 he was awarded the Bonifacio VII International Prize "...for a culture of peace", a prize previously awarded to personalities such as the Presidents Emeritus of the Republic Oscar Luigi Scalfaro and Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, Nobel Prize winner Rita Levi Montalcini, Senator Giulio Andreotti and many others.

On 5 January 2023 he was appointed Advisor to the Minister of Health for the dental area.

In January 2023 he was elected National President of the Italian Society of Odontostomatology and Maxillofacial Surgery.

On 23 February 2023 he was appointed to the National University Council (CUN) as representative of non-state universities.

January 2024 ha was appointed MEmber of è nominato Member of the Select Committee of the Conference of Italian Rectors which includes 10 rectors regarding the modification of access to university courses in the medical area.
