1956. Born in Genoa on 20/01/1956.

1974. He obtains his Scientific Maturity Diploma at the "Sacra Famiglia" Institute in Genoa.

1980/81. Attends the Dental Clinic of the University of Genoa as an internal student in the Surgery Department during the 1980/1981 academic year.

1982/83. Graduates in Medicine and Surgery with top marks at the University of Genoa.

1982/83. Attends the Dental Clinic of the University of Genoa as coordinator of the clinical services of the Department of Experimental Surgery in the years 1982 and 1983. In the same period, he was the winner of a Study Grant for epidemiological research in Odontostomatology awarded by the A.S.I.L.S. through the University of Genoa for the Province of Genoa and then of an A.S.I.L.S. Study Grant for the Provinces of La Spezia and Savona.

1983/84. Admitted to the School of Specialization in Odontostomatology at the University of Genoa.

1985/86. Appointed Adjunct Professor of Practice at the Dental Clinic of the University of Madrid for the 1985/86 academic year, where he collaborated on clinical activities mainly in the field of fixed prostheses.

1985/86. Awarded the Diploma of Specialization in Odontostomatology with distinction at the University of Genoa.

1986/87. He held a seminar on Fixed Prosthetics for the Degree Course in Dentistry and Dental Prosthetics in the 1986/87 academic year. 2005. He was appointed scientific director of the Overland for smile project, which provides dental care to patients in orphanages in underdeveloped countries. Later, Prof. Gherlone himself realised all the clinical protocols applied within the project.

Winner of a research project of national relevance PRIN funded by MIUR: PRIN 2005 prot. 2005063925_002 "Biomechanics and biomimicry: an integrated approach for the functional validation of the use of nanostructured materials in implant-prosthetic rehabilitations", coordinator Prof. Apicella, Unit "Histological, histomorphometric and microtomographic evaluation of the osseointegration of implants with nanostructured scaffolds", scientific responsible Prof. Enrico Gherlone.

2006. Appointed President-elect of SIOPI (Italian Society of Prosthetic and Implant Dentistry) for the two-year period 2006/2007-2007/2008)

2006. He was entrusted by the Lombardy Universities with the patronage of the College of Dentistry, as Chairman of the Organising Committee, with the implementation of the 1st National Autumn Expo Congress "third millennium dentistry between public and private" held in Milan on 30 November-1 December 2007.

2007. He was the winner of a project co-financed by the Ministry of Health concerning the RF 07 finalized research entitled "Evaluation of implant-prosthodontics rehabilitations in disability, special needs and low socio-economic condition patients". This project involved carrying out hundreds of implant-prosthodontic rehabilitations on disabled patients and low socio-economic groups with a two-year follow-up.

2007. Elected to the national board of the "Permanent Conference of Degree Courses in Dental Hygiene".

2007. Scientific Director of the "Victoria Regia" Dental Centre of Excellence set up by the "San Raffaele Incontro" foundation in Amelia (TR).

From 2008 to 2011 he received from the Minister of Health the delegation of Referent of dental activities in the "planning commission" Ministry of Labour, Health and Social Policies and then Ministry of Health.

Designer and delegate of the Minister of Health for the formulation of clinical recommendations in Dentistry, with the collaboration of the Order of Physicians, Scientific Dental Societies, professional associations, College of Dentistry Lecturers.

Within the framework of ministerial activities, Prof Gherlone was also:

  • Coordinator of the Working Group for the drafting of the "National guidelines for the promotion of oral health and the prevention of oral pathologies in individuals of developmental age who are to undergo chemo- and/or radiotherapy" (Decree of the Deputy Minister of Health, 06-11-2009);
  • Coordinator of the Working Group for the drafting of the "National guidelines for oral health promotion and prevention of oral diseases in adults" (Decree of the Head of the Department of Prevention and Communication, 27-10- 2008);
  • Member of the Editorial Committee for the drafting of the Report on the Health Status of the Country 2007-2008; Member of the Editorial Committee for the drafting of the National Oncological Plan 2010-2012;
  • Member of the Working Group on Rehabilitation (Decree of the Undersecretary of State of 17-11-2009);
  • Member of the Scientific Committee of the 'Quaderni del Ministero della Salute', a periodical publication with a high technical-scientific content.
  • Scientific Responsible for the project "Experimentation of an outpatient pathway for the prevention/diagnosis/treatment of oral cavity pathologies in drug dependent, HIV positive and HCV positive subjects.
  • Scientific responsible for the project "Experimentation of a territorial pathway for the prevention/diagnosis of malignant tumours of the oral cavity.

In 2009, as a contact person for the Minister of Health, Prof. Gherlone was involved in the agreement between the ministry itself, ANDI (National Association of Italian Dentists) and OCI (Italian Catholic Dentists) concerning Social Dentistry, i.e., facilitating access to affordable non-LEA (Essential Levels of Care) services for the less affluent sections of the population.

From 2009 to 2019 he was co-director of the Bone Physiopathology Program (BoNetwork) of the San Raffaele Scientific Institute, formed by basic, translational and clinical research groups, whose mission is to better understand the basis of bone tissue homeostasis and the pathogenetic mechanisms of bone diseases, to be translated into the identification of potential therapeutic targets and prognostic markers for skeletal diseases.

From 2010 to August 2013 full member of the Higher Health Council where he represented the dental area.

He currently sits on the technical table as coordinator of the Clinical Recommendations in Dentistry project.

2012. Winner of selection by the Ministry of Universities and Scientific Research (MIUR), obtained the qualification of commissioner by lot for the national scientific qualification as professor in the first and second tier, competition sector 06/F1 SSD MED28 Odontostomatological Diseases

Since 2012 supervisor of the research unit within the framework of FIRB RBFR08T83J_002 "Bio Biomimetics and biomechanics of perimplant scaffolds made up of hybrid ceramo-polymeric materials", a research project co-funded by the Ministry of University and Scientific Research.

2013. Elected Vice-Chancellor of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery at the University Vita-Salute San Raffaele (office terminated on 8 November 2018 with the taking up of office as Magnifico Rector, office reconfirmed in November 2021).

In February 2016, after evaluation of international publications in implantology by the Academy of Osseointegration (AO) of the United States of America, in San Diego California, he received the prestigious "William Laney Award".

In June 2016, at the first course council meeting of the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University of Dentistry and Dental Prosthetics degree course, with a vote by all course lecturers, he was unanimously re-elected President.

On 8 November 2018 he was elected Magnifico Rector of the University Vita-Salute San Raffaele.

Since 3 February 2020 he has been Director of the "Research Centre in Odontostomatological and Implant Sciences, OdontoCenter" at IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital, in Milan.

Since 10 April 2020 he has been Coordinator of the Ministry of Health's technical table on "operational indications for dental activities during phase 2 of the Covid-19 pandemic" satellite of the Central Cts. Issued on 13 May 2020, they enabled dental procedures to be carried out safely for both patients and operators, as demonstrated by the data: no cases of contagion within the workplace were recorded for dental practice assistants (INAIL data) and only 0.25% for dental hygienists.

Since 30 September 2020 he has been a member of the National Observatory of Specialist Health Training of the Ministry of University and Research, Coordinator of the Subcommission of Non-Medical Specialization Schools and of the Subcommission of Medical Specialization Schools - surgical area.

He is currently Coordinator of the Technical Table of the Ministry of Health aimed at training, research and planning of dental activities, appointed by Decree of the Chief of Staff of the Minister of Health on 5 November 2020.

Since December 2020 he has been Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Palazzo Arese Borromeo European Cultural Centre Association.

In November 2021 he was re-elected Magnificent Rector of the University Vita-Salute San Raffaele.

On 15 February 2022, by decree no. 2923 of the Ministry of Health, he was appointed full member of the Higher Health Council.

On 3 December 2022, he was awarded the Bonifacio VIII International Prize "...for a Culture of Peace", a prestigious recognition previously awarded to personalities such as the Presidents Emeritus of the Republic Oscar Luigi Scalfaro and Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, Nobel Prize winner Rita Levi Montalcini, Senator Giulio Andreotti.

On 5 January 2023 he was appointed Advisor to the Minister of Health for the dental area.

In January 2023 he was elected National President of the Italian Society of Odontostomatology and Maxillofacial Surgery.

On 23 February 2023 he was appointed to the National University Council (CUN) as representative of non-state universities.
