Antonio Gasbarrini
Antonio Gasbarrini (born October 11, 1963, Bologna, Italy) is the head of the Medicine and Surgery Department of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart of Rome, Professor in Internal Medicine at the same university and Director of the Operative Units of Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology and of the Digestive Diseases Centre of the Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Gemelli IRCCS of Rome.[1]

He is chairman of the Committee of clinic consultation, didactics and scientific and of the Committee of conflict of interest at the Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Gemelli IRCCS di Roma[3].
He is also a Member of the academic Senate at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart[4] and he is a Member of the Pastoral Council of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart.
He graduated in Medicine and Surgery with honours in 1988 at the University of Bologna and he specialised in both Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology and Digestive Endoscopy. He has attended as Clinical and Research Fellow in Gastroenterology the Biochemical Lab Liver Transplantation Department at the University of Pittsburgh (USA) from 1990 to 1993.
He coordinates the integrated course of Medical Clinic and Medical Therapy of the Degree Course in Medicine and Surgery of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery at the Catholic University and he manages the School of Specialisation in Internal Medicine.
He is editor o associate editor di many international scientific journals and he is member of many italian and international Scientific Companies. From 2006 to 2008 he has been Secretary of the Associazione Italiana Studio Fegato (AISF)[5] and from 2008 to 2011 Chairman of the Fondazione Italiana Ricerca in Epatologia (FIRE); from 2010 to 2015 he has been coordinator of Alleanza contro le Epatiti (ACE) and from 2016 to 2021 he has been vice-chairman of the Fondazione Italiana Malattie Digestive.
He is member of the Governing Councils of the European Helicobacter and Microbiota Study Group (EHMSG) and of the European Association of Gastroenterology Endoscopy and Nutrition (EAGEN). He is member of the Scientific Committee of the United European Gastroenterology (UEG), of the Associazione Italiana Celiachia (AIC) and of the Transdisciplinary Research on Food Issues Center (TROFIC) of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart. He is member of the Consiglio di Amministrazione della Fondazione Policlinico Universitario A. Gemelli IRCCS.
He has been invited to carry out readings and reports at numerous congresses and international and national courses and he has obtained prizes at the international and national level. He is author of more than 1240 publications cited on PubMed[6]. He has an impact factor for his published papers of more than 4500, a H-Index of 94 (20/04/2023) in Scopus[7] and of 124 (20/04/2023) in Google Scholar and his papers have been cited more than 73.000 times[8].
His interest is on acute, chronic and oncological inflammatory diseases of the gastrointestinal system, liver and pancreas. During the last years ha has developed a particular interest in the role of gut microbiota in health and in the pathogenesis of digestive and extra digestive diseases, in the interaction between Liver-Gut and Brain-Gut, and in the role what nutrition, probiotics, antibiotics and Microbiota transplant exercise to modulate it. He has been principal investigator of many preclinical and translational studies and trials of phase 2 and 3 on liver tumours, liver transplantation and microbiota, Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, complications of cirrhosis, irritable bowel syndrome, celiac disease and malabsorption syndromes, dysbiosis and microbiome, pancreatic and biliary tract diseases, gastritis and Helicobacter Pylori infection, breath testing and new endoscopic diagnostic techniques and ultrasound in gastroenterology.
