Research

Claudio Ronco has developed the first miniaturised filters for hemofiltration performing the first treatment in the world with continuous arterio-venous hemofiltration in neonates and small infants. Subsequently he developed a miniaturised machine for the dialysis of neonates called CARPEDIEM (Cardio Renal Pediatric Dialysis Emergency Machine). For this reason he is considered a pioneer in the field of dialysis and in the pediatric intensive care.[10][11][12][13][14][15]

He has defined the modern classification of cardio-renal syndromes. He has been the first in the world to find a link between cardiologists and nephrologists for a common classification.[16][17][18]

Claudio Ronco has been the first nephrologist in the world to create a link between nephrology and intensive care giving birth to a new discipline called critical care nephrology.[19][20]

He has promoted the nomenclature standardization in the extracorporeal therapies[21] [22] and the study of the bioengineering applied to the extracorporeal therapies of vital support[23].

Honours and awards

  • 1983 Schwartz Award, for the best paper of the year, Italy.[24]
  • 1984 G.F. Volpato Grant for the best research project on acute renal failure in Italy.[25]
  • 1989 Best paper Prize at the Italian Society of nephrology meeting.[25]

Scientific publications

In 2015 and 2016 the John Hopkins University nominated him Top wordlwide researcher in the field of kidney diseases. He delivered more than 1000 lectures and presentations at congresses and universities. He has published 1429 publications (1125 are listed on Pub Med) on nephrology, dialysis and transplantation. He published 84 volumes on nephrology, dialysis and intensive care (among them Critical Care Nephrology). Since 1977 he has conducted clinical activity by treating patients with kidney disease. Since 1979 he has conducted research and educational activities in the field of replacement therapies, applied technologies, applied bioengineering and biophysics, acute kidney injury and peritoneal dialysis. His researches are well known in the field of critical care medicine for the introduction of a new multidisciplinary approach to the critically ill patient. This approach is known worldwide as "Vicenza Model". The "Critical Care Nephrology" was born from his will to unify different disciplines. Other important researches are in the field of artificial organs (liver and kidney above all), of bioengineering, physics and nanotechnologies applied to medicine. His recent studies on the wearable artificial kidney and on the cardiorenal syndrome. He created the first miniaturized artificial kidney for the treatment of infants with cardiorenal disfunctions. He is member of the editorial board of 12 scientific journals. He is editor in chief of Contributions to Nephrology. He is editor in chief of Blood Purification. He is editor emeritus of The International Journal of Artificial Organs. He is associate editor of Critical Care. He was part of the board of directors of 5 scientific societies. He was President of the International Society of Hemodialysis. He has organized a significant number of courses. Among them: - International Vicenza Courses - Meeting RRI in New York - CRRTeams in New York and Pittsburgh - Peritoneal Dialysis and CRRT masters in Vicenza - CRRT seminars in South Africa - Cardiorenal Syndrome Course at the New York Academy of Medicine - Annual Course on CRRT for nurses in Vicenza He founded the Acute Dialysis Quality Initiative (ADQI) consensus group with the Univeristy of California and the University of Pittsburgh in order to prepare the guidelines on Acute Kidney Injury.[28] [5]

Fiction books

Along with his many scientific books published in his career, Claudio Ronco is also author of many successful fiction books. Carpediem, printed in 7000 copies in Italy, tells the story of Lisa, the first child to be treated with the pediatric dialysis machine invented by professor Ronco. Has been translated into Chinese, English and Spanish.[29]

After this, he published The Connectivist, a book about all his passions.[30] Then Virus. Le ombre della Luna[31], a tale of four friends and their choices, Una sera al bar[32], the story of a friendship set in Venice, and Echi dalle Montagne a memoires of this time spent in Asiago[33].
