Robert Philipp Wagensommer, born 1981 in Rome (Italy) and grown up on the Gargano promontory (Foggia, Italy) between San Giovanni Rotondo and San Marco in Lamis, is an Italian and German botanist.

Education and career

Robert Philipp Wagensommer holds a bachelor’s degree in “Natural Sciences” (2004) and a master of science degree in “Biodiversity and Nature Conservation” (2006), both at the University of Rome “La Sapienza” (Italy). Subsequently he obtained a PhD in “Biosystematics and Plant Ecology” (2010) at the University of Florence (Italy), and a PhD in “Geological, Biological and Environmental Sciences” (2017) at the University of Catania (Italy).

From November 2019 to September 2022 he was a tenure-track fixed-term researcher (RtdB) at the University of Bari “Aldo Moro” (Italy)[1]. Since October 2022 he is a tenured associate professor at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano (Italy)[2].

Research interests

Robert Philipp Wagensommer’s research focuses mainly on the vascular flora of Italy[3][4][5][6], with particular attention to the flora of Puglia[7] and especially of the Gargano[8][9][10], dealing with taxonomy, rare and threatened plant species and vegetation analysis. Since 2006 Robert P. Wagensommer collaborates with Dr. Wolfgang Licht of the Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz (Germany) on a critical screening of the vascular flora of Gargano (Italy)[11].

Robert Philipp Wagensommer described 3 plant taxa as new for science, re-evaluated 2 plant taxa, lectotypified 13 plant taxa names, and described 8 syntaxa as new for science.
